Asphalt Roof Shingles
Asphalt shingles are economical and versatile, which may be why they represent more than 80 percent of the roofing market. They are suited to roof pitches from 4-in-12 to vertical, and are available across a wide range of quality, cost, and style. Asphalt shingles are compatible with many different kinds of flashing and edging products, and don't require specialized accessories for roof edges, wall terminations, chimney or vent flashings.
Asphalt shingles now come in all kinds of colors and profiles. The old 3-tab shingles are still around, but a wide range of "architectural" shingles, whose profiles suggest the random shadows and patterns of slate, or wood shingles, are readily available. These specialty shingles often carry a longer warranty.

Cedar Sakes
Although more costly than Asphalt shingles, cedar shakes add a distinct look to your house.
Cedar roofing comes in two varieties -- shingles or shakes. A shingle is tapered and smooth sawn on both surfaces for a uniform appearance. A shake is split to reveal the uneven natural grain of the wood on the face and is usually much thicker than a shingle. A cedar shake roof has a much more rustic appearance, but may not be historically accurate for most homes.

Composite Slate Roofs
Composite slate roofing is made out of a few materials, but the most popular is a mixture of genuine slate powder and plastic. There is also ceramic based and plant fiber based composite slate roofing. The plant fiber based material is not so popular in areas where it freezes and thaws out a lot during the winter, as this makes the tiles warp.

Standing Seam
Metal roofing's attributes are impressive. Durable and long lasting, a metal roof requires little maintenance, can be retrofitted over many existing, is available in a wide range of colors and styles, and is fire resistant. A standing seam roof is constructed of many interlocking panels that run vertically from the roof's ridge to the eave. The interlocking seam where two panels join together is raised above the roof's flat surface, allowing water to run off without seeping between panel. Standing seam roofs can easily last the life of a home or Commercial building.
